Word & Color of 2017

The blogger in me felt the need to pick a word for the year. I told myself I wasn’t going to but… Well, if I’m being honest, the Lord had other plans for me. See, I have been really frustrated with a lot of things in my life lately and decided that I was just going to pray about it and let God handle it. Something that keeps coming back to my life is writing. I know that I’m supposed to use writing to make a difference in people’s lives. (I know this seems off topic. Bear with me.) I was adamantly not going to fall into the “word of the year trend” buuuutttttt here I am, writing about my word of the year. Obviously, my plans don’t always line up with what the Lord has in store for me. THAT much was made very clear to me in the last year.

My word for this year is WILD. Now, no, I’m not going back to my party days. I’m not going to be a crazy wild-child this year.

a (1) :  not subject to restraint or regulation :  uncontrolled; also :  unruly (2) :  emotionally overcome <wild with grief>; also :  passionately eager or enthusiastic <was wild to own a toy train — J. C. Furnas>b :  marked by turbulent agitation :  stormy <a wild night>c :  going beyond normal or conventional bounds :  fantastic <wild ideas>; also :  sensationald :  indicative of strong passion, desire, or emotion <a wild gleam of delight in his eyes — Irish Digest> (From Merriam-Webster

I’m turning 30 this year. I’m going to be unapologetically ME. I’m not going to water my personality down. I’m a very emotional person. I get easily attached. I get excited. If I’m into something, I’m UTTERLY OBSESSED with it. and I’ve always thought of that as a bad thing. I’ve always considered my wild heart to be a bad thing. Not very many people truly appreciate raw, passionate people. I need to stop worrying about them and focus on the people that DO appreciate that. The people that love to hear about my passions, my hopes, my dreams, my visions, my life…   I’m going to embrace my wild, gypsy heart and see where that takes me. I found some quotes that really sold me on “Wild” —

“She is vulnerable, as all open hearts are, but she is wild and free and can handle a few scars.”  – A.R. Asher

“Be both soft and wild just like the moon. Or the storm. Or the sea.”  – Victoria Erickson

“She was a wild one; always stomping on the eggshells that everyone else tip-toed on.” – Kaitlyn Foster

“She was a wild child; always stealing the stars and getting drunk on the souls of the earthbound misfits.”

NOW, as far as the color goes. This is something new to me. At work they pick a color for the year. Last year it was red, this year it’s blue. When we were discussing the color for the year at work, the color that the Lord put on my heart personally was purple. The color purple is symbolic of spirituality, creativity, royalty, and dignity. It’s considered an uplifting and calming color — something my life definitely NEEDS. I’m not sure how I’m going to incorporate the color purple into my life but it’s my color this year. I’m looking forward to what that entails.

Do you have a word or color (or both!) of 2017? Tell me!

I’m Back

I know. I’ve said this about a million times….

I’m back! Life has seriously been so crazy and … well, crazy. But, I  have posts planned out and I’m officially getting my butt back into blogging because I’ve missed it way too much!

I’ll write more later!

Geek Fuel {October}

October was a good month. The box included:

  • Yondu Funko Pop! I am actually really happy about this. The only other Guardians of the Galaxy Pop! I have is the LootCrate exclusive Groot. It’s nice to add another one to my collection. Guardians of the Galaxy is easily one of my favorites.
  • The Force Sleeps Pillowcase

Hello. Star Wars anything is my favorite. I mean, if you could see my room, you’d know that this was destined to be in my room. Star Wars forever. Plus, napping is easily the best part of my day.

  • Guardianade Energy Drink

I don’t drink energy drinks, unfortunately. I’m getting a collection of the cans though! The flavor is “Energy Sword Citrus” and it’s a Halo mashup. So, I love the can. I wish I could say that I loved the drink but it’s going to sit unopened on my shelf.

  • Over 9,000 Zombies! Downloadable Game Code

This is a how-long-can-you-survive game which always kind of stress me out. But, it’s fun!!

  • Delorean Time Travel Vinyl Sticker

Nerdy confession – I’m not obsessed with Back to the Future. But I do love time travel. So, the sticker is kind of cool. I’ve put it on my computer.

  • Save The Clock Tower Paper (with a giveaway!)

I didn’t win the giveaway but it was fun! They printed a number on the back of the paper to call. It was so much fun.

  • “Video Games Live” Exclusive T-Shirt

Everything about this shirt is yes. I love it. It’s made of up different controllers which is always fun. I like seeing which ones people notice first.

Geek Fuel is a monthly subscription box that guarantees $50+ value in every box. Each month you get an exclusive t-shirt and a steam game. Which is always right up my alley – My steam game collection is growing nicely… Now if I could just find the time to play them more often. (Add me?)  Anyway, you can sign up for Geek Fuel here.

Guest Post: Sincerely, Sara

Hello, The Nerdy Fox readers! It’s Sara from Sincerely, Sara!

Sincerely Sara Pic

I like to think that everyone is nerdy in their own way, whether that means liking comic books, Lord of the Rings, cooking, surfing, watching horror movies, cosplaying, or all of the above. If you’re nerdy like me then you like fashion and books, both separately and together. I have a fun series on my blog called Inspired By, where I create outfits based on books (as well as movies, TV shows and more) because I believe us nerds are definitely fashionable!

March Geek Fuel Review

Geek Fuel
March Geek Fuel box

I am SO excited about this box! March’s Geek Fuel box included:

Geek FuelThis AWESOME Star Wars print. I am a huge fan of Star Wars (did you know?) and I love this print. The artist can be found on instagram @darrylljones and I can’t give you an accurate price comparison because I haven’t been able to find one similar. If I base it off of society 6, it’d be about $15.00 so, that’s what I’m going to go with.

Geek FuelEnergy Drink Gears of War Imulsion: $2.99 (plus $4.99 shipping on Amazon) Now, I don’t drink energy drinks. I can’t tell you how it tastes or if it’s worth it as far as energy drinks go. However, it’s a cool can and I think that’s all I really care about.

Geek FuelWarmachine Tactics: $39.99 – This is a turn based strategy game that is pretty fun. I’ve only played for a little bit. I’m obviously not very far in it but I’m enjoying it.

Geek Fuel
A Game of Thrones: Comic Book, Issue 9: $3.99 – I don’t think that this needs any explanation of why it’s awesome. Game of Thrones in comic book form? Yes, please!

Geek Fuel

Retro Magazine: $10.00

Geek FuelDragon Glass arrowhead: found similar on etsy for $4.59 —  I was sooooooooo excited about this! Game of Thrones, obsidian, and an arrowhead?? I’m making it into a necklace.

Geek FuelThey included this about Leonard Nimoy. I didn’t write anything about his passing and I feel like perhaps I should have. Spock is my favorite TOS character and of course, I love him in the alternate universe. Leonard Nimoy was an amazing person and it really upset me when he passed away. He did teach it was okay to be a little different and to be kind and to be yourself. Dif-tor heh smusma.

Geek FuelT-Shirt: Similar shirts are around $20.00 – HOW AWESOME IS THIS SHIRT?! It has all of my favorites! Left to right: Mario, Megaman, Sonic, Zelda, Halo and Final Fantasy! It makes me so happy. This is definitely my favorite shirt right now.

Total: $96.59 based on similar items I’ve found online.

Overall, I LOVED this box. It had so many awesome games. The only thing I won’t be using is the energy drink (maybe. I still might drink it) but I think the Gears of War can is AWESOME so it’s going up on a shelf to be displayed.

Reasons You Should Switch From Blogger To WordPress

It’s been about a month since I decided to switch from blogger to wordpress. I’m honestly surprised how much BETTER is! It looks better, it’s easier to use, and the best part of it is, my stats are up by at least 197% … Crazy, right? The numbers are going up every. single. day.

switch from blogger to wordpress

My blog is still a less than a year old, it’s still a baby.  So, any increase in views is great. So my numbers are still small but the increase is huge! The best part about making the switch from blogger to wordpress is that it was seriously so easy. It was an easy download, upload/install and bam, it was all there. Of course, the longest part of the switch was also breaking up with 1&1 and waiting for the DNS to update. I’m still tidying everything up and going through old posts, and editing the categories and tags and setting featured images – it’s a slow process but it’s worth it. I’ve seen an increase in my older posts as well as the new ones I’m posting. I am still kind of shocked that the numbers have gone up so much in the last month and here are my thoughts on why it’s up so much.

It looks more professional and is more streamlined. Blogger is great and I feel like a lot of bloggers can make the templates work for them but I know that since switching I get more compliments on my layout and theme than I ever did before. It looks and feels more like a “legit” blog and less like a personal blog. With both wordpress and blogger, I spent countless hours working on things, switching things around and making little tweaks. I have found that overall, the wordpress route is just better.

User Friendly

I think that the biggest issue my blogger blog was having is that it wasn’t very user friendly. The share buttons were weird, the comments were constantly wonky because of the app i was using. It was just hard to use. It wasn’t easy to share, it wasn’t easy to comment, and if we’re being honest, it wasn’t easy to look at. Now, it’s super easy to share and comment and it’s pretty! On blogger I was using Intense Debate, which I love on other people’s blogs, it just gave me so many issues. People wouldn’t use it and it’d erase any comments that had be published before then… It was just a really big pain in my ass. I’m using disqus on my blog now. It’s easily a million times easier to use and I have had ZERO issues with it. The amount of reader engagement is definitely up. I can tell by the number of comments and the amount of shares I am getting.

Not that I wasn’t proud of my blog before the switch but, I’m super proud of it now. I am more likely to engage with randoms about my blog and I leave more comments and I network a lot more now because I am proud of my blog. Not only is it pretty but, I want to put more time and effort into my blog. It definitely shows in the numbers. It should also be noted that I was having some issues with my bloglovin feed/RSS feed before this. People weren’t seeing my new posts unless they were coming to my blog. It was strange. Since discovering that, I am more consistent about checking my RSS feed and making sure that things are updating correctly because the decrease in November/December was almost heartbreaking.

Have you made the switch from blogger to wordpress? What are your thoughts on it?

Makeup Tips: Stop Doing These Makeup “Trends”

make up trendsSo, I spend an embarassing amount of time watching makeup tutorials and researching makeup tips. I also kind of judge people based solely on their makeup. Here are some of the things that just drive me bonkers.

1. Winged eyeliner with NO mascara.

First of all, if you’re going to go through the trouble of doing winged eyeliner, put on some damned mascara! It’s so distracting to see beautiful winged mascara and then eyelashes with no mascara on them! Stop it!

2. Stop making your eyebrows look like sperm.

The sperm eyebrow is far too popular and far too ugly. Eyebrows shouldn’t look like this. Ever. Stop drawing sperms on your face. Thanks. (also, you’re welcome, you’ll never be able to see this style of eyebrow without thinking of sperm.)

3.  Pretty much everything in this video:

I can’t handle these things ANYMORE! Stop doing them, please! PLEASE!

I can’t be the only one that has makeup pet peeves. What are yours??
